Edo Iroha Karuta is a type of karuta that originated in Edo during the late Edo period.
Although it emerged later than the Kansai-style karuta, its remarkable popularity led to nationwide spread by the late Meiji era. It is also called “Inubō Karuta” after the first proverb, “Even a dog walking around will eventually hit a stick.” Today, “Iroha Karuta” almost exclusively refers to “Inubō Karuta.”
Proverbs embody the wisdom and teachings of people's daily lives. With karuta, you can learn proverbs while playing. Furthermore, playing it together with the “Kyoto Iroha Karuta,” which features proverbs from the Kansai region, allows you to enjoy comparing the cultural differences between regions at that time.
Includes commentary by Masamichi Tokita, author of the Iwanami Proverbs Dictionary and a scholar of proverbs and karuta. English explanations are also provided, making it a delightful gift for international friends.
The reading cards feature hiragana only, making it easy for young children to play. The cards have a substantial thickness for durability. The backs are adorned with a beautiful cherry blossom pattern.
